FM Hydro is proud to announce that it has been selected as one of 15 companies to join the fifth Ocean Startup Challenge, a national program designed to support the next generation of ocean innovators. The Ocean Startup Project awarded a total of $350,000 in funding to this year’s cohort, along with targeted mentorship and commercialization support.
The Ocean Startup Challenge identifies high potential ventures that can transform the global blue economy. The 2025 cohort represents innovation across marine renewable energy, sustainable materials, decarbonized shipping, ocean monitoring, and maritime safety.
As part of this group, FM Hydro is advancing tidal and river power generation with its patented Archimedes screw turbine. This breakthrough system delivers clean, reliable energy from flowing water without the need for dams. Validated by industry experts, the technology is scalable, environmentally sound, and addresses one of the most important challenges in the renewable sector: baseload power.
Participation in the Challenge provides FM Hydro with access to experienced mentors, industry partners, and curated exposure within Canada’s ocean innovation ecosystem. These resources will accelerate commercialization and support the company’s mission to lead the hydrokinetic sector from promise to profitability.

Since its launch in 2020, the Ocean Startup Challenge has supported more than 90 startups, helping them secure millions in follow-on investment, create jobs, and bring new technologies to market. The program is recognized as one of the leading accelerators in the blue economy sector worldwide.
